The Social Network Score Wins Awards

The Social Network Score

The Social Network was a film that was admired by viewers and critics alike for several reasons, not the least of which was the film score that featured two well known names in the music industry. The film score was essentially the project of Trent Reznor, singer for Nine Inch Nails. He enlisted the help of Atticus Ross to complete the project. The two composers had worked together previously on the Ghosts I-IV album from Nine Inch Nails. However, The Social Network marked their first time working on a film score.

In the beginning, director David Fincher already had Trent Reznor pegged to be the composer of the score, but the musician declined to participate. After reading the script, Reznor decided that the project would be worthwhile and finally signed on. With Atticus Ross assisting with the composing duties, the music that emerged had a dark feel to it that mirrored the film very well. The combination proved to be well done and The Social Network managed to take home the Best Film Score Academy Award for the year 2010. The album managed to take top honors from other film organizations, including the prestigious Golden Globe.

Although the majority of the music was original, there were some tracks that were interpretations from the Ghosts I-IV album. These Nine Inch Nails songs were reformatted to fit the mood of the film. Release of the first five songs was done for free, but listeners would have to wait for the full album. The film score hit the online sellers first, with listeners being able to buy the album from Amazon on September 28th. The full retail version would arrive in the next month in three versions. In addition to the standard compact disk, a buyer could also choose from a vinyl record format or a Blu-ray disc that features 5.1 surround sound audio.
